Garney Construction is seeking an enthusiastic individual, initiative-taking to spearhead our business development initiatives in Southwest US while based in Phoenix, AZ. The successful candidate will have water and wastewater experience and a deep understanding of the markets, having exposure both public and private. They will understand the technology and engineering involved in water and wastewater and have a command of alternate project delivery methodology.


  • Establishes and maintains client contacts and develops business development strategy. Strengthens current business ties; coordinates meetings between clients/potential clients and technical or other key individuals.
  • Investigates and understands the internal business processes of potential and key buying personal and can discuss relevant business challenges for each.
  • Develops a robust and well-qualified lead bank of well-qualified public clients, government agencies, private clients, and industrial clients.
  • Actively documents all prospect activity in accordance with Garney’s processes and methodologies using the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database, Cosential.
  • Leadership in development and execution of regional / industry-specific marketing and branding plans, in collaboration with corporate marketing staff, including plans for local conferences, events, and industry networking.
  • Works closely with Garney marketing, estimating and project management teams to develop and execute strategies and new methods for introducing Garney to prospective clients.
  • Develops proposals for services in response to invitations to bid and provides leadership and direction to proposal team from inception to completion.
  • Works collaboratively with Garney team members to: strategize, present, and demonstrate tailored solutions demonstrating Garney capabilities with multi-year business relationships.
  • Efficiently manages time to focus on the highest priority activities that align with the strategy and business plan.


  • Possess and continually develop a technical understanding of customer’s business objectives.
  • 4-year degree or equivalent preferred. In Engineering or Construction Management a plus.
  • At least 5 years of diversified experience in water infrastructure specific programs/project management and strategic business development is preferred.
  • Experience with Design Build, Design Build Operate, CM/GC (CMAR) and/or other alternate delivery methods is required.
  • Prior business development or sales experience is a plus.
  • Strong work and personal ethics, self-motivated and results driven.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • A proven record of successfully creating interest and intrigue for a technical product or service.
  • Consistently exceed expectations on meeting goals.
  • Function well in a fast-paced, informal environment where constant change is the norm and the bar for delivering results is set high.
  • You enjoy collaborating with clients while understanding their diverse personalities and their business needs.
